I'm not a big drinker. In fact, I have a two drink limit as that's about all my stomach can handle.
A year ago, a friend turned me on to a new drink that is simply a mix of Coke Zero and Malibu Rum (I didn't drink in high school so Malibu is new to me). Although Coke Zero isn't great for you, it's super refreshing to sip on while at the lake.
I was drinking my Coke Zero with Malibu the other day and my friend said, "Malibu has a ton of sugar in it." What? I thought I was having a super low calorie drink!
While Coke Zero has no calories and no sugar, Malibu rum has 13g of sugar and about the same in carbs, plus 140 calories per serving. Yikes!
After learning that, I did some research on some of my other favorite drinks. Here's what I found:
Gin & Tonic: 130 calories & 14g of carbs
Brut Champagne: 65 calories & 2g of carbs (hooray, at least this one is a great option!)
Mojito: 217 calories & 13g of carbs
Moscow Mule: 130 calories & 15g of carbs
Here are some alternatives to drinking smarter.
Ranch Water (Topo Chico & Tequila): 85 calories 3g of carbs
Gin & Soda: 137 and 1g of carbs
Vodka Soda with a lime: 106 calories and 0g of carbs
Truly: 100 calories and 2g of carbs
Wine: 123 calories and 4g of carbs
Sometimes you just need a margarita though, right? Make it a skinny one instead. Most "skinny" margaritas weigh in around 103 calories and 10g carbs, compared to 274 calories and 34g of carbs in a regular one.
Drinking water in between alcoholic beverages will also help you consume fewer calories and carbs.
Next time I need something refreshing, I'll be sipping on my Champagne or some of these lighter alternatives! What about you?
