Weight loss for pre-empty nester women who don't like working out

10 Jobs for a Stay At Home Mom

Most likely, the reason you decided to stay home was to create a more successful home.  With inflation and looming recession, you might be thinking it’d be a good time to look for a job that gives you the flexibility to continue to be home with your kids but helps financially. That’s why I put together “10 Jobs for a stay at home mom” because I know how hard it is to juggle family and a job.

I want you to be successful at it all!

Let me start by saying, the best job I ever had was staying home with my kids. I loved being able to be present for all of their growing milestones. Now that I am an empty nester, I realize how quickly they grow up!

When my husband and I were dating, we decided that my husband would have a full time job and I would be a stay at home mom. We lived on one salary from the time we were married so that we were used to it once we had kids. We were able to get along fine until the kids came along.

Kids are expensive, aren’t they?

I understand the pressure it can be to be a single income family. For years, I could see that  pressure reflected on my husband’s face. I knew I needed to do something about it.

I wasn’t the best at staying on budget which created additional stress in our marriage. This caused many “discussions” about how I just couldn’t seem to stay on budget. I wasn’t even out shopping at fancy stores. I was simply going over budget with the necessities.

I was tired of being strapped. I was tired of our “discussions”.  I was tired of having to say “no” to my kids for things they wanted.

But we had made a deal when we were dating, right? I was the one who was going to stay at home with our kids. It was a conundrum.

Maybe you are in a different season of life. Maybe your kids are older or maybe you are even experiencing empty nester life? Maybe you’d like to find something to occupy your time, give you a little more purpose to your day, or maybe help pay for your kids’ college?

Because I’m now experiencing empty nester life myself, I know how difficult it is to navigate that season. That’s why I love this list for you too.

Whatever season of life you are coming from, I believe this list can help you find a little more flexibility with your finances. Being strapped financially is not fun in any stage of life. It’s time to find a job for a stay at home mom, stat!

I finally found something for myself, which is the number ONE job on my “10 Jobs for a stay at home mom” list and I can’t wait to share that list with you.

Before we get to the list, however, we need to start thinking about these six questions:

  1. How much time do you have to dedicate to a job?
  2. How will you balance family and that job?
  3. Will it require you to leave the home and can you do that?
  4. What skill set do you have or can you develop through this job?
  5. What are the start-up costs involved in starting this job?
  6. Does this job have greater income potential as you grow?

These are questions you need to ask yourself before choosing a job to do as a stay at home mom. They are the same questions I had to ask myself when I knew I needed to help financially but also continue to put my family first. They will help you narrow down your choices.

When my boys were 6 months and 3 years old I started selling clothes from my home once a quarter at my home with a company. Even though it was just once a quarter, it began to interfere with our family. I actually didn’t even recognize that it was an unhealthy distraction until it was pointed out to me.

I was really sad to stop selling those clothes, but my family was my priority. I had to stay in line with the boundaries we had set for our family. I needed to find a job that worked better with my time constraints.

It’s definitely hard to balance family and a jobHowever, we all have 24 hours in a day and what we do with that time matters. You’d probably be surprised with how much time you actually do have once you have a little more structure to your day.

I found that I could “do it all” by spending a little less time on social media, watching fewer Netflix shows, and saying “no” to things that really didn’t matter to me. When you have a goal it’s also much easier to structure your day.

I would also emphasize how important it is that you and your spouse communicate. Clearly communicating with your spouse is key to finding success when both are juggling jobs and kids. I appreciated it when my husband would let me know when I was getting too distracted with my job, leaving the family feeling slighted.

When my kids were little, I couldn’t find a job for a stay at home mom that had me leave home. But when they were going into kindergarten, my husband suggested that I get an hourly job at Ann Taylor Loft or a shop nearby, but I knew that I’d most likely spend my whole salary on the cute clothes and I was worried they would schedule me on a Saturday or Sunday when my kids were home.

As an empty nester, it’s no longer an issue to work outside the home. It might even be nice if you are wanting to get out of the house. However, having a set schedule to work each day will impose on your time flexibility.

If you’ve been out of the workforce for long, you might feel light years behind in technologyThe good news is you can basically research any kind of training and learn anything from the internet! If you are willing to get uncomfortable and grow, you can do just about anything!

Some jobs have minimal start-up costs. If your job requires a computer, you will most likely have to provide your own. If you are working outside the home, you might have to purchase nicer clothes to wear.

Let’s get to that list of “10 Jobs for a Stay At Home Mom” now that you have answers to the above questions, shall we?

Note: These jobs are jobs I’ve done or that friends have done to help contribute to the financial stability of their families. I even googled average pay so you can compare them.

1. Online Health Coach - Selling Beachbody fitness and nutrition supplements is a great job to have that allows you to have flexibility of time as well as great earning potential. Commission is 25-40% with residual income and bonus potential. You can find out more here.

2. Virtual Assistant - If you are detail oriented, one great job is to become a virtual assistant (VA). VAs work remotely and the average pay is $21.12 per hour. You’ll most likely need to brush up on the latest technology in order to have one of these jobs. Some will let you work your own hours but others will require more of an 8-5 type schedule.

3. Teaching English online - A very popular job is teaching English online. Many of these teachers work early in the morning before their kids are up for the day since they could be teaching students on the other side of the globe. The average pay is $10-20 per hour.

4. Re-Sell Online - Several of my friends are selling things on Amazon, Poshmark, eBay, and more. They find various products to sell (or resell), list them on the site of choice and based on the difference in what they paid for it, less fees the online platform charges, and shipping (if not paid by the purchaser). You have to be an authorized seller of brands to sell on Amazon, however, and it’s a little more involved.

5. Social Media responder - Yes, this is an actual job! Those that have this job are in charge of making sure direct messages, social media posts, and emails are answered in a timely manner. This is a great job if you are social media savvy. The pay averages around $20 per hour.

6. Bus Driver - Becoming a bus driver is great for those looking for an early morning and a mid afternoon job. To be hired as a school bus driver in Texas and begin to drive a school bus, there are a couple of requirements including getting a Class B CDL with passenger P at the DPS office, having an acceptable driving record, and being certified in bus safety (which they provide training for), and be in good moral standing.

You will get earn around $19 per hour and they help you with the certification classes.

7. Mother’s Day Out or Substitute Teacher - When my kids were little, they would go to Mother’s Day Out two mornings a week. It was a great break for all of us. They got to be with friends and learned, and I got some breathing room from them. The pay is around $12 per hour.

Substitute Teaching is a great job when your kids are in school full time since the hours are the same as your kids. The average pay in Texas is $85/day. Funny story: I actually got certified as a substitute teacher when my youngest went to kindergarten but got fired before I even started because I blocked out too many days not wanting to work. Ha!

8. Uber/Uber Eats Driver - If you love driving around town, becoming an uber/uber eats driver is a great option. Uber drivers get paid a portion of their fee plus tips. According to the data, Uber Eats drivers earned, on average, $9.37 per trip and $15.84 per hour so far in 2022. You’ll have to deduct gas and mileage on your car from your earnings.

9.  Pet Sitter - Becoming a pet sitter could be a fun job to invite your kids along as long as the pets are friendly toward kids. It’s a great way to teach kids how to care for animals.  As per my google search, pet sitters can charge an average of $25 per 30-minute visit, $20 to $30 per day, $45 to $75 per night, and/or $250 to $375 per week.

10.  Baking/Meal Prep - When my kids were little, we wanted to go to Disney World. In order to pay for the trip, I sold cakes and cake balls to help pay for the trip. Most baking and pickups had to be done on the weekends.  Make sure to cover the cost of goods while still earning profit as these costs have gone up in recent years.

Is your head spinning with all of these options?

There are so many jobs not even listed here that many of my friends are doing. There’s never been a time when we have had more options to work from home while also raising a family. There is no reason to feel financially strapped with so many choices out there!

I know when I became a Beachbody Coach, I had no training. I wasn’t even that physically fit at the time! I was tired of being strapped financially and knew I needed to make a change.

Coming from a long line of obesity and diabetes, I knew that this job for a stay at home mom was perfect for me because it gave me the accountability I needed for my health, the time flexibility I needed, and the income potential that our family needed. Plus, with such a low start-up cost and only needing my computer, it was a no-brainer.

After not much time, I loved having money to get my hair colored, my nails done, and shop without the gilt. I loved being able to finally say “yes” to opportunities for my kids. I loved seeing the less stressed look on my husband’s face!

The more I look at the opportunities out there for moms, the more I’m convinced that becoming a Beachbody Coach is the best option. You literally get paid to get/stay healthy and work on your development as a person. Plus you get to choose your own hours, be your own boss, and there is no ceiling to your income potential.

Whichever job for a stay at home mom you might choose, the goal is to be a little less stressed financially, enjoy your family more, and find purpose in all the things you do. Time with your kids goes by so fast so make sure you are intentional!

There was a recent post in my neighborhood Facebook group that read: In search of a unicorn: Remote, work-from-home, part-time job Make my own hours Not MLM Not cold calling I've done Door Dash before but don't want to put any more wear/tear on my car. I'm an efficient typist. I have 13+ years of self-taught graphic design (Photoshop & Illustrator) experience. I'm tech-savvy, creative, and I learn quickly. Any ideas? It made me wonder why Network Marketing/MLM jobs get such a bad rap? I get it, I used to avoid the lady at my church who always wanted me to have a home party for her. And, I said “no” to all the people who introduced me to their opportunities. A few bad apples might have left a bad taste in your mouth too. However, I remember reading a book about Mary Kay Ash when I was in elementary school. The business she created allowed her to be present for her kids while also building a business. That was something I always desired. And the business model she created also made sense. It was a lot of people coming together to do a little which compounded into something big. As a stay at home mom, I was getting tired of being strapped financially and I wanted some play money. I didn’t want to work outside of the home because my kids were my priority and I wanted to be fully available to them. I was approached by my BFF about a business. At first, I said no and began to avoid her like the lady at my church. But, then I started to become curious about the business opportunity. I’d seen how well the products worked for my BFF and her husband. And, I remembered Mary Kay Ash’s network marketing business. This business opportunity wasn’t selling makeup, pills, or a face cream but a lifestyle change that would create a ripple effect for those who used the products. It was what I personally needed for my health and it made sense. I can tell you the truth about network marketing. It is the best business model I have found for women who want to work their own hours, has a small start-up cost, and allows them to leverage their time by working as a team. It takes hard work, diligence, and being coachable. You are the type who isn’t afraid to try something new and wants to create a ripple effect that can make an impact on generations to come. Let’s make a lasting impact together. More information about how you can join me in changing lives can be found here .
