“Where’s the Beef” was a popular line from a Wendy’s commercial when I was growing up. Everytime I heard that phrase I’d think of one thing: worm juice.
“Wendy’s burgers have worm juice in them” was something someone told me. I don’t remember who--it was probably a very reliable source on the playground-ha ha!--but I believed them. And because of that belief, I’ve never had a Wendy’s burger. Their #4 Chicken Sandwich combo however was a college diet staple.
Yes, I obviously needed Beachbody in my life.
Clearly, Wendy’s burgers aren’t made with worm juice. Is worm juice even a thing? I don’t know. But an impressionable adolescent believed it was true and to this day, when I see a commercial of a juicy burger, all I can think of is worm juice.
There is a point to this story.
Your beliefs dictate your actions.
Maybe you’ve tried to start a new nutrition plan or an exercise program. You start with the “action” of eating healthier or working out only to find you get distracted, disinterested, or disillusioned.
Maybe this year you’re thinking why bother? Maybe you don’t even want to think about making a change because what’s the use?
What if “failure” in the past didn’t have anything to do with your willpower or discipline but everything to do with your belief?
Any of these sound familiar?
“You are just going to gain the weight back.”
“You have fat genes and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
“You aren’t consistent at anything.”
“You are just going to fail again.”
Yep! Me, too!
Phrases like this replay over and over until we start to believe them. Just like the worm juice, they’re totally false statements, but we listen to them, believe them, and our actions follow.
Until you change your belief/thoughts, your actions won’t make a difference.
The next time one of your untrue thoughts comes to your mind,
1. Write it down.
2. Cross it out.
3. Rewrite it:
I’m not going to gain the weight back because I’m choosing a sustainable lifestyle.
My genes don’t dictate my future.
I showed up today.
I have the tools I need to be successful.
4. Believe your rewritten statements!
It’s time for you to stop believing the story you’ve told yourself because it’s held you back long enough.
