Sometimes we don’t understand God’s plan but one day we look up and see how He weaves things so inarticulately, it just gives you chills. And, I feel like my Dad was second to God in being the great connector.
In April 2011, my Dad asked me to drive to Houston to be a part of an event he was doing called “Dance Your Shoes Off”. It was a flash mob where thousands would gather and do a synchronized dance while leaving their shoes behind at the end that would be donated to those in need.
I have to tell you, I was reluctant to drive down. I so didn’t want to go.
Then, he told me I had to go to a practice.
[Insert eye roll.]
At that practice, I looked beside me and a girl I knew from my college days was standing there beside me practicing as well. She was a sweet girl who rushed me during my freshman year and we remained casual friends throughout our college days, Paige. I always thought she was so neat!
We reconnected and laughed together about our lack of remembering moves.
The next day, I went to the actual Dance Your Shoes Off and I have to tell you…it was one of the most impactful worship times and coolest experiences I’ve ever had. I was so grateful for my Dad’s pushy ways to persuade me to go.
Several years later, Dad persuaded us to come down from Colorado to Baylor to attend the FIRST Baylor game in the new stadium. Dad had gotten us tickets from one of the guys who was in his youth group 30 years prior, Chris Manning. Chris’ hook up landed us not only in seats but in the Athletic Director’s box!
Before the game, we were walking around the Student Union building and I ran into that sweet girl again, Paige. It was fun to run into her again and she was going to be sitting in the box near us.
We connected on Facebook and watched each other from a far.
Last fall, I saw her post that her son had gotten into Baylor so I messaged her because we were on pins and needles waiting for Will’s acceptance letter.
She said, “I’d love for our boys to meet” and we started planting those seeds in our boys’ ears careful not to make them feel like we were arranging “play dates” for our 18 year old, man-children.
As I shared more about Paige to my Mom, she told me what sweet friends’ Paige’s parents were to my parents during my Dad’s cancer battle and how my Mom taught Sunday school with Paige’s Dad.
I had no clue.
She also shared that Paige’s Cousin was our dear friend Shelley.
What a small world!
At this point, I couldn’t tell if it was my Dad orchestrating all of this from heaven or God’s way to just saying “I weave all things together”.
Once the boys decided to room together, we were so excited for them.
A few weeks later, another long time family friend texted me to tell me that her son, Micah, was going to Baylor.
She said, “I love how God works and for some reason I feel like this is God and Papa Steve looking down and smiling on them knowing each other.”
Will and Micah were together as babies at an event called ONE DAY…one of the first Passion conferences, put on by Paige’s cousin Shelley, because Micah’s Dad worked for Passion.
It gets even crazier…somehow with the Houston connection, Paige’s best friend’s (Lindy) son got connected with Micah to be roommates.
As I met Lindy at Orientation, she patted me and told me how much my Dad meant to hear.
We both sat in Waco Hall (a place where Dad LOVED to sit and watch Sing/Pigskin Revue as well as lead a few chapels) in tears.
Oh…and Waco Hall is next to the church where he helped produce one of Choice Ministry (which then became Passion Ministries) albums.
As we were checking Will in for Line Camp (without a phone since they take them away), I was a little anxious. But, just like God to weave all things letting us know that He is in total control, as I looked at the sign on his dorm room, the name of the boy that would be his roommate for the next 3 days was one of my sorority sister’s son (the only other sorority sister that had a boy at the camp) who we’d met the day before in Penland while having lunch.
And, before we drove away, Chris messaged us to tell us he had 4 tickets for the first Baylor game so we could watch Will run on the field with the Baylor Line.
Although Dad didn’t go to Baylor, he acted like he had and I know he’s so happy that Will is at Baylor.
Oh, how he would have loved to watch Will run on that field.
I’m pretty sure he and God had a deal worked out long before I watched it unfold this past year.
